Winner: Virginia Tech Hokies (No. 21 up to No. 18)

For the first time since 2005, Virginia Tech faced off against West Virginia in the battle for the Black Diamond Trophy. It was a hotly-contested affair which ended in a 31-24 victory for the Hokies. Heck, Virginia Tech has held onto the Black Diamond Trophy since 2003.

This team looked solid in the first game of the season under the direction of freshman quarterback Josh Jackson. He completed 15-of-26 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

However, the passing defense didn’t look all that great late in the game against Will Grier.

In fact, the Mountaineer quarterback passed for 371 yards and three touchdowns. If the Hokies are going to hope to move up even more and contend for the ACC title, they will need an improved secondary performance.

Still, this team had an impressive Week 1 win against a dark-horse contender from the Big 12. A rivalry game victory in the opening week has to feel good.
