Ranking coming into Week 1: No. 25

So, that was eventful on Monday night, eh Vols?

It took a comeback — not as exciting as UCLA’s — for Butch Jones, new quarterback Quinten Dormady and the Vols to survive their opener in the new home of the Atlanta Falcons against Georgia Tech on Monday in double overtime.

Despite 249 yards on 44 carries from Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall against the Volunteer defense, the Vols got 127 yards and four scores from John Kelly, a blocked field goal at the end of regulation and two scores in overtime to win a 42-41 thriller to close out Week 1 of the college football season.

After just 14 points in the first three quarters, the Vols scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and in the two overtime sessions to start the season 1-0 and to likely move up a few spots after a few losses in front of them this week.

The “Fire Butch Jones” talk got a lot quieter after the final stop in double OT for the Vols, but it’s not going to get any easier for Jones with a short week awaiting them and then a trip to The Swamp to face the Gators in two weeks.
