The Maryland Terrapins football team suffered a couple of devastating losses in their first game.

Maryland’s starting quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome is out for the season after suffering an injury against Texas Saturday, according to head coach DJ Durkin. Additionally, defensive end Jesse Aniebonam will likely miss the rest of the year as well. This news comes after an exciting weekend for the Terrapins football team. They defeated the No. 23 Texas Longhorns in an offensive showdown by a score of 51-41.

Maryland was able to open up holes in Tom Herman’s defense and Pigrome played a big role in that. Before succumbing to injury, Pigrome was 9-of-12 passing for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Also, he ran for a touchdown. His quarterback rating was an outstanding 89.4 at the time of his injury.

Pigrome had to be helped off the field late in the third quarter with a knee injury. It appeared serious from the moment he suffered it, and as it turns out, it was a torn ACL.

Luckily for Maryland, freshman Kasim Hill was able to come in and contribute in a big way to lead his team to victory. Hill led the team down the field for two important fourth-quarter touchdowns that secured the win.

The new back up quarterback is sophomore Max Bortenschlager.

Maryland’s offense is more carried by its running game, so they hope the injury to Pigrome won’t ruin their season. In fact, the team ran for 263 yards in total on 43 attempts in the win on Saturday.

Aniebonam’s injury was a fractured ankle. Durkin wouldn’t say that the defender would miss the entire season, instead, he noted that Aniebonam will be out for “several months.” He will have surgery Tuesday and begin his rehab process in hopes of returning towards the tail end of the season.

He led Maryland in sacks last season with nine, so his absence will be felt immediately.
