20 little-known facts about Canelo Alvarez

12. The Alvarez brothers all fought on the same card in 2008
Jumping ahead to 2008, this was one of the most magical nights for the Alvarez family. I mentioned off the top that all of Canelo’s brothers boxed professionally but only four of them, including Canelo, went on to accomplish anything. The other three – Gonzalo, Daniel and Victor Alvarez – all made their debuts on this night.
This wasn’t like the time Conor McGregor brought a UFC card back to Ireland and famously proclaimed “we’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over.” All three of those debutants lost their first fight and never went on to compete again (save for Victor, who retired with an 0-2 professional record). But for the rest of the Alvarez brothers, it was a moment they’d cherish for the rest of their lives.
The eldest Rigoberto was the only other one that competed regularly alongside Canelo. They both came into the card with 19 wins and zero losses, while Ramon and Ricardo had just two professional fights under their belt. While both Ricardo and Canelo had to go the distance in their fights – Ricardo’s was a four-round fight while Canelo’s was 10 rounds – Ramon and Rigoberto scored knockouts while Rigoberto won the Mexico Super Middleweight title.
While Canelo has had the greatest success out of anyone in his family, his victorious brothers went on to have long and fruitful careers. None have been good enough to attract the attention of a promoter like Golden Boy, since hardly any of them have competed outside of Mexico. But no matter how big Canelo becomes, he can always credit his older brothers for getting him into the sport in the first place.
