Sam Darnold, QB, USC

Considered the Heisman Trophy favorite coming into the season, USC Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold didn’t look the part if you look at his numbers from their narrow Week 1 victory over Western Michigan. Darnold found the end zone just once overall and that was with his legs. What’s more, he also threw two picks on the day. Suffice it to say that it wasn’t his best outing overall.

Even still, Darnold’s other numbers were still solid. He went 23-for-33 on the day and threw for 289 yards. What’s more, anyone watching the game will tell you that Darnold was put in bad spots by his receivers early on in the game. His first interception was off a ball that should’ve been caught. Secondly, his completion percentage and totals would’ve been higher if not for numerous other drops on the afternoon. He wasn’t perfect, but his line also wasn’t all his fault either.

Now Darnold has a chance to storm back into the Heisman race with a big performance in Week 2. He’s going up against a ranked Stanford team that should present a good test for him and the Trojans. If he’s able to rebound and right the ship, The Darnold won’t be going anywhere in this 2017 Heisman race.
