Myles Garrett injures ankle in Browns practice
By Joe Romano
No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett is giving Cleveland Browns fans a scare before the first game of his career.
The Cleveland Browns selected Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the top pick in this year’s NFL draft. Garrett was the consensus best player in the draft by experts, drawing comparisons to the best pass rushers in the NFL.
Adam Schefter reported on Twitter that the talented rookie was unable to finish practice after hurting his ankle on Wednesday,
Cleveland will be holding its collective breath awaiting results of further testing to Garrett.
The Browns play AFC North rivals in the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday for their first game of the season in Cleveland. The team envisioned Garrett being a focal point of their defense and attacking quarterbacks all season. At the top of the list had to be Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who they will face twice per season.
Garrett has a history of injured ankles. At the end of minicamp in the spring, he suffered a left ankle injury. During his time at Texas A&M, Garrett played through a high ankle sprain. Ankle injuries are nothing new for the rookie.
The team has yet to release further information on his injury. Further tests will show the significance of the injury. For now his status will be up in the air.
Cleveland could potentially be losing a dominant defensive force. Already without its top defensive tackle, Danny Shelton, who is sitting with an injury of his own, the Browns need Garrett to be available Sunday. The team will need him after losing veteran corner Joe Haden to the Steelers and touting a young secondary.
