After an ultimately shocking opening week of college football, which teams need to be on upset alert in Week 2 of the 2017 season?

With Week 1 of the 2017 college football season in the books, there weren’t that many upsets to write home about. Tom Herman’s debut with the Texas Longhorns obviously is the exception there as the then ranked Longhorns were toppled by Maryland after conceding 51 points. Other than that, however, there were more close calls then actual upsets.

Among the close calls in the opening full weekend of college football were the USC Trojans being tested against Western Michigan, Ohio State getting pushed early by Indiana, Tennessee needing overtime to take down Georgia Tech and even Wisconsin falling behind Southern Utah early on. With that said, all four of those teams prevailed.

That being said, fans aren’t going to be robbed of upsets all season long. They’re coming — they always do. And there are numerous matchups on the Week 2 slate that could get things started in that regard. Teams with injuries, teams with bad matchups and teams that need to prove themselves are all on the docket in Week 2 of the season.

Now that we’ve established that, let’s dive in to those teams that should be on upset alert in the second week of the 2017 college football season.

5. TCU Horned Frogs

Rank: 23, Opponent: Arkansas

With Kenny Hill returning as the starting quarterback for the TCU Horned Frogs, there were hopes that this team could put things together on a consistent basis. In Week 1, they looked as if they might be on the verge of doing just that. Sure, they were up against an inferior Jacksonville State team, but they ran through them like a quality team should. With that said, Hill and company won’t be dropping 63 points on their Week 2 opponent.

The Horned Frogs will now travel to Fayetteville for a date with Bret Bielema’s Arkansas Razorbacks. Though TCU may be the ranked team in this matchup, the Razorbacks are not an easy team to knock off. In fact, the argument could be made that they also deserve to be ranked. As such, the Horned Frogs most certainly need to be put on upset alert this week.

TCU’s defense will be tested by a high-octane offense led by quarterback Austin Allen. Allen has proven himself numerous times throughout his career, even if he hasn’t put it all together consistently. What’s more, the Razorbacks always seem to have a solid rushing attack and that seems to be the case again. Put simply, there isn’t that wide of a gap between these two teams. But with the Horned Frogs ranked ahead, that makes for a potential upset.
