Because Hurricane Harvey aid is a bipartisan cause, and the opening night for the NFL season is the largest possible platform.

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that it often takes something horrible for people to truly come together, but that’s also the time we need our fellow people the most. In the case of Hurricane Harvey, more of that spirit is still needed, and an ad running during tonight’s NFL season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots could help.

The ad is for the One America Appeal, an organization dedicated to spending every cent donated to it to Hurricane Harvey relief. To get its message out, all of the still living former presidents — Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter — appear in the commercial you will see during tonight’s game.

Obama tweeted the ad out a little bit prior to the beginning of the pre-game coverage on NBC:

Unfortunately, Hurricane Irma is also bearing down on Florida right now, but One America Appeal is already gearing up to help with recovery efforts there too if needed. A FAQ for the organization explains exactly how money donated through its efforts will be allocated and allows you to donate either electronically or by check if desired.

Sports are obviously a much lower priority in times of crisis, but they can be powerful platforms to focus attention and effort where it’s needed most. Hopefully, the One America Appeal will be able to springboard off the massive audience the NFL opener is sure to have and do some good for the people of Texas.
