It’s that time once again. On Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots kicked off the National Football League’s latest season. On Sunday afternoon, Jay Gruden’s Washington Redskins host Doug Pederson’s Philadelphia Eagles in a meeting between the third- and fourth-place teams, respectively, in the NFC East a year ago.

It has been quite a busy offseason for both of these clubs. Each franchise has brought in its share of help when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. Both the Birds (Derek Barnett) and ‘Skins (Jonathan Allen) used first-round selections up front when it comes to their department. And these clubs have a few new faces at the wide receiver spots.

This season, Eagles’ second-year quarterback Carson Wentz will now be throwing to the likes of veteran Torrey Smith and Alshon Jeffery. Meanwhile, 2015 first-round pick Nelson Agholor looks like an improved player. For Washington’s Kirk Cousins, Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson have moved on and Terrelle Pryor and Brian Quick are in. And the team has underrated wideout Jamison Crowder.

The Redskins opened as a consensus 2.5-point favorite (courtesy of SportsBook Review). That’s no real surprise considering that Gruden’s club has won the last five encounters in this longtime rivalry. Also consider that the Eagles have lost three straight and are 1-4 in their last five appearances at FedExField.

This figures to be a very entertaining game between two teams more than capable of making a lot of noise in the NFC East. Don’t be surprised if you see more than a handful of big plays by both the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins as their revamped defensive units will take some time to settle in.
