ESPN College Pick Em Picks Week 2, 2017

Week one of ESPN College Pick Em had a few close games. I ended up with 45 points, which has me in a tie for 6th place in the Fantasy CPR readers group. espnblaze12 led the way with 53 out of a possible 55 points. The only game he missed was Texas-Maryland.

(1) Stanford over USC:

Sam Darnold wasn’t all that strong against Western Michigan. Stanford’s defense will be able to hold him as well. The loss of Juju Smith-Schuster is hurting more than it should. As for Stanford, they don’t seem to miss Christian McCaffrey at all. Keller Chryst knows this is his team, and the offense really moved around him. I get it. Rice is awful. But a good Western Michigan team just gave Stanford a blueprint on how they can win this, and the Cardinal have the talent to do it.

(2) Oklahoma over Ohio State:

Oklahoma couldn’t run the ball last year anyway, so I’m not really worried about what we don’t have in the backfield. An Indiana team that has a mutation of the Oklahoma offense hung with the Buckeyes for a half with a defense that isn’t as good as Oklahoma’s. Last year Oklahoma had too good of a team in the opener. This year they had one that didn’t really tell us anything. The secondary looks better than last year, and I know the front four is. We have plenty of weapons on offense. I’m worried about the defense. Ohio State looked out of sorts for most of the first half on offense. If they come out slow again, they are in trouble. This is the best offense they will face this year.

(3) Georgia over Notre Dame:

The Irish defense dominated Temple, but Georgia has a massive line that opens up equally massive holes for two running backs that will be in the NFL very soon. Can the two headed rushing attack single-handedly beat the Irish? They may have to with QB Jacob Eason out. Jake Fromm looked better than Eason last week. He will need to step up and avoid mistakes to win this road test.

(4) Clemson over Auburn:

Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham looked mostly lost last week. Clemson looks like they hadn’t missed a beat despite replacing most of the offense. The defense is still intact, which means that this may end up being a low scoring game. Auburn’s defense is stout as well. Their offense is still a question mark without Pettway.

(5) TCU over Arkansas:

Week one told us virtually nothing about these two teams. All I know is that Kenny Hill looked better than Austin Allen, and that the Toadies have more road wins that any other power five team in the last ten years. That’s good enough for me!

(6) Iowa over Iowa State:

The battle for the CyHawk trophy is a hotly contested affair. It could be again this year, but I really don’t see a scenario where Iowa doesn’t pull away with this at some point. The Cyclones struggled with Northern Iowa in week 1. The Hawkeyes dominated Wyoming. Now, the Panthers and Cowboys are likely about the same level, but I end up checking every box for Iowa in this one. There is not one area where the Cyclones are better.

(7) Louisville over North Carolina:

The Tarheel defense was abused by Cal in the opener. Lamar Jackson will find that yards are much easier to come by against the Heels than against Purdue last week. Jackson could have a huge game here to really get that hype machine going.

(8) Oregon over Nebraska:

If Royce Freeman doesn’t leave the game against Nebraska last year, I’m pretty sure the Ducks would have won that game. Nebraska had problems stopping the run last season. You know, when their defense looked markedly better than the unit that gave up 500 yards at home to Arkansas State. Mike Riley has Oregon’s number, but this time I don’t think it matters.

(9) Utah over BYU:

BYU was methodical against Portland State, then absolutely dominated by LSU. Utah is somewhere in between the two. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Utes are closer to LSU. BYU hasn’t been able to get the run game going, which happens to be a strength of the Utah defense anyway. I know this is the Holy War, but it may take an act of God for BYU to win this.

(10) Penn State over Pittsburgh:

The Panthers needed overtime to dispose of Youngstown State. Quadree Ollison had a solid game, but he also led Pitt in receiving with just 35 yards. Pitt was unable to complete anything down the field, which is going to be a huge problem against Penn State who didn’t allow much of anything to Akron. Pitt is likely better than Akron, but not much.
