In what will go down as a hilarious comedy of errors, Louisiana Tech fumbled the ball at the six-yard line and recovered it … at their own seven.
Mississippi State vs. Louisiana Tech never figured to be a memorable game. But on one play, we saw the difference between the Power Five and Conference USA.
L-Tech fans were at least hoping their team would put in a respectable showing against their fellow Bulldogs. But after three quarters, with Mississippi State up 57-14, they were just playing for pride. They had a good opportunity at the start of the quarter when they got a first-and-goal, but on second down, they fumbled the ball. And it didn’t stop rolling.

If you recover your own fumble, but lose 90 yards on the play, did it really happen? That was a truly forgettable — or unforgettable, whichever way you look at it — play for Louisiana Tech, but at least they had a sense of humor about it:
Louisiana Tech aren’t the same lamb to the slaughter that Fresno State was to Alabama. They came off a 9-5 season, and could have another respectable record if they make it back to the Conference USA title game. But in games like this, we see just how far away they are from Power Five teams, even ones as perennially disappointing as Dan Mullen’s Mississippi State.
Plays like this go to show how anything can happen in college football. Even in a blowout, you may see misplays the likes of which you’ve never seen.

Now that the easy part of Mississippi State’s schedule is over, they face a tough test in LSU next week. They can’t count on blind luck plays like this to go their way again. But in a division like the SEC West, it’d be nice if they could catch a few more breaks.
