The Detroit Lions will look to make it back to the playoffs in 2017, and will play host to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 on Sunday.

Last season, Matthew Stafford led his Detroit Lions teammates to the playoffs. Throughout the regular season, the Lions flirted with winning the NFC North, but ended up losing the title to the Green Bay Packers in Week 17. They had an uninspired effort in their Wildcard Round game as well, so they will be looking to get the 2017 season off on the right foot.

The Arizona Cardinals nearly went to the Super Bowl two years ago, losing out to the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship Game. Last season, the Cardinals struggled to win the close games, and played inconsistent football throughout. They have all of their big weapons back for another run in 2017, which should make this matchup on Sunday a good one.

There are a bunch of teams that could make it to the NFC Playoffs this season, and the Lions and Cardinals are two of them. Both teams have veteran quarterbacks who can put up big numbers, though the Cardinals have the advantage at running back. David Johnson may be the most versatile back in the NFC, and should give the Lions matchup problems in Week 1.

The NFL season is always filled with surprises, just as the Lions showed us last year. Teams change from year to year, and each get to start with a clean slate in Week 1. Both of these teams will be battling it out for at least a Wildcard spot until late in the season, so Sunday will give us a nice preview of two teams that could be playing football in January.
