On Sunday at FedExField, the Washington Redskins fell to the Philadelphia Eagles. What did we learn from this Week 1 divisional clash?

The Washington Redskins had won their last five meetings with the Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, Doug Pederson’s team dropped its final seven road games a year ago. Did something have to give when these two teams met at FedExField on Sunday?

What gave was Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, obviously in a generous move. He committed three of the team’s four turnovers in the 30-17 loss to the Birds. That included a fumble returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Eagles’ defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.

Three Stars

1. Jalen Mills

The Eagles are very high on the young cornerback and understandably so. He frustrated Redskins’ quarterback Kirk Cousins continuously, especially when the Washington offense got into the red zone. Mills finished with a team-high nine tackles (8 solo), knocked down two passes and recorded his first career interception.

2. Carson Wentz

In Year Two of the Mighty Carson Players, the improving quarterback pulled off quite the Houdini act in throwing an early 58-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor. The second overall selection in 2016 hit on two thirds of his throws (26-of-39), good for 307 yards and two scores (1 interception returned for a score).

3. Zach Ertz

Another emerging player for the Eagles, the talented tight end was targeted eight times and pulled down all of those throws for 93 yards in Sunday’s win. The catches and receiving yards led Philadelphia in this 13-point win over Jay Gruden’s squad.

Odds

The home-standing Redskins opened as a 2.5-point favorite – hardly a surprise given the fact Washington had prevailed in five straight meetings and the Birds had lost seven straight road games dating back to last season. But all good and bad things must come to an end.

Next Week

The Philadelphia Eagles visit an old friend next Sunday when they travel to Arrowhead Stadium and clash with Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs. The Washington Redskins also hit the road, heading to the west coast to face the Los Angeles Rams.
