On Sunday in Orchard Park, the Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets. So what did we learn from this Week 1 encounter?

So much for the New York Jets extending their winning streak against their AFC East rivals from Orchard Park.

We kind of got what we expected from Todd Bowles’ team in in terms of offense. Led by quarterback Josh McCown, the Jets managed only 214 total yards and one touchdown in a 21-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Meanwhile, Sean McDermott got his NFL head-coaching career off to a good start. The club rolled up 408 total yards, 190 of those on the ground. The Bills won the time of possession battle (33:04) and avenged a pair of losses to the Jets from a season ago.

Three Stars

1. Tyrod Taylor

The underappreciated quarterback enjoyed his usual solid outing. Taylor’s third season with the team began with 224 passing yards and two scores (1 interception) in the 21-12 victory. He also gained 38 yards on the ground on eight rushing attempts. Buffalo’s offense ran an impressive 72 plays and gained 408 yards behind Taylor.

2. LeSean McCoy

There was nothing shady about McCoy’s play on Sunday. He ran 22 times for 110 yards, averaging 5.0 yards per attempt. He also led the Bills with five catches, good for an additional 49 yards in Buffalo’s victory. All told, he touched the ball on 27 of the team’s 72 offensive plays against the Jets.

3. Jordan Poyer

The offseason free-agent addition from the Cleveland Browns made his presence felt in numerous ways in the nine-point win. The versatile safety finished with three total tackles while knocking down two passes. He also leveled Jets’ quarterback Josh McCown via a sack and had one of the team’s two interceptions in the contest.

Odds

Even though Buffalo was swept by the Jets in 2016, they still opened up as a five-point favorite and covered the number. Meanwhile the over/under in this contest was only 40.5 points.

Next Week

For the second straight week, the New York Jets are on the road. Only this time, the trip is considerably longer as they head to Oakland to face the Raiders. On the other hand, the Buffalo Bills hitch their wagons and travel south to clash with the Carolina Panthers.
