According to leaks to prominent Apple-watching sites, we could be in for the reveal of three new iPhone models this week.

It’s a debate that has been stirring among Apple fans and industry watchers for some time: would the next model be the iPhone 8, in keeping with its traditional numbering, or the iPhone X as a nod to its 10 years of existence?

Why not both?

According to The Washington Post, two prominent Apple-centric sites, 9 to 5 Mac and MacRumors, both managed to do some digging into what appears to be the final build of iOS 11. Inside, they found hints that Apple was getting ready to announce three new devices, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus would naturally be the next iterations of the standard phones, with Apple introducing the Plus line to combat competitors who market phones with bigger screens like the Samsung Galaxy Note line — so-called “phablets.”

As for the iPhone X, that would seem to be the rumored high-end phone that may not be widely available until later this year and could cost around $1000. That would make it the most expensive iPhone ever, but Apple is surely counting on brand loyalty and the desire of many consumers to have the newest, most capable device around to make it a success.

Still, having two other choices would hedge the company’s bet somewhat, as well as enabling people who want one immediately to grab an iPhone 8 if desired. If history is any guide, the Friday of the week after the iPhone press event, which would be Sept. 22, would be the most likely release date for the normal phones.

We’ll find out soon enough if these leaks are legit. The Apple press event takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. Eastern time / 10 a.m. Pacific.
