Chargers at Broncos: Highlights, score and recap
By Brad Weiss
The Denver Broncos got off to a hot start to their 2017 NFL season, beating the Los Angeles Chargers at home on Monday Night Football.
In an AFC West matchup on Monday Night Football, the Los Angeles Chargers traveled to Denver to take on the Broncos. In true AFC West fashion, the game went down to the wire, with the Broncos holding onto the victory at home.
For a while this game looked like it was over, as the teams went into the fourth quarter with the Broncos up by the score of 24-7. They had never lost a lead this big, and on Monday night, they were able to hang on for the 24-21 victory. The Chargers played their hearts out in their first game as the Los Angeles Chargers since 1960, and it looks like the AFC West is going to be solid once again in 2017.
Quarterback Trevor Siemian had to once again beat out Paxton Lynch for the starting job this summer, and he certainly made the coaches look like they made the right decision in this one. The former Northwestern signal-caller was involved in all three of the Broncos first touchdowns, throwing two scores, and running one in. The Broncos went 8-6 with him as their starter last season, and he showed incredible promise on Monday night.
The Chargers quarterback, Philip Rivers, has that never-say-die attitude, and that was on full display on Monday night. He threw two fourth quarter touchdowns, but in the end, a blocked field goal proved to be the deciding factor. A pass interference call with 0:17 seconds moved the Chargers into field goal territory, but the Broncos special teams came up huge.
Congratulations to Vance Joseph on his first NFL win as a head coach.
Highlights
Three Stars
- Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos
Trevor Siemian had to once again beat out Paxton Lynch this summer, and he did his best to put a tight grip on the starting quarterback spot on Monday night. Siemian threw two first half touchdowns, and ran one in, as he led the Broncos to a 24-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. He continues to grow as a passer, which could make this Broncos team scary
- Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers
When the game is on the line, Philip Rivers is always at his best. The veteran quarterback nearly willed his team to the victory on Monday night, throwing two fourth quarter touchdown passes. The Chargers last-second field goal was blocked, but Rivers had his team in position to pull off the road victory, and was certainly one of the best players on the field against the Broncos.
- Bradley Roby, Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos cornerback came up big on Monday night, starring in the team’s AFC West win against the Chargers. Roby had five tackles, three which were solo, and came up with a big interception. The 25-year-old also had two pass defenses, as he once again played a key role for one of the best defenses in the NFL.
Betting Odds
The Los Angeles Chargers come into the game against the Denver Broncos as three-point underdogs, and incredibly, that is how much they lost by. The over/under was set at 43, so the over won the money in this one. Head over to SportsBook Review for the latest odds prior to kickoff.
