Manchester United are back in the Champions League after a one year layoff. Despite finishing in sixth place in the Premier League last season, they won the Europa League to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament. United have been stellar in league play so far, and will be hoping that will transfer into cup competition. Jose Mourinho will be without two center-backs in Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, though. Bailly is continuing his suspension after a red card in the Europa League semifinal, and Jones will serve his after verbally abusing the match official in the final. Even with the two suspended, United should be able to win their first contest at home.
Basel currently sit in third place in the Swiss Super League behind FC Zurich and BSC Young Boys. They have not won in their last three matches heading into the clash against United. Basel have become an absolute dominant force in the Super League, winning the last eight titles in a row. They have become a mainstay in the Champions League, and are usually a difficult out. Last year’s cup competition was their worst performance for some time, as they finished fourth in the group behind Paris Saint-German, Arsenal and Ludogorets.
