Demetrious Johnson unsure if Ray Borg can be trusted to make fight
Demetrious Johnson is unsure if he can trust Ray Borg to show up if fight is rebooked but plans to be ready if it is.
Demetrious Johnson arrived in Edmonton last week with hopes of leaving with his UFC flyweight championship and the record for consecutive title defenses. Johnson did go home with his title, but after Ray Borg was forced to pull out late in the week due to illness, the fight was called off and Johnson’s hopes at making history were dashed for the time being.
UFC is left in a spot where they could try and re-book Johnson and Borg for an upcoming card, or they could go another direction and book Johnson against another flyweight contender. If it is Borg that gets the call, Johnson says he isn’t sure Borg can be trusted to make it to the cage but also knows it’s out of his hands.
“I have no idea [if I can trust him to show up],” Johnson said on “The MMA Hour” on Monday. “All I can do is what I do best, get ready for my fight and hope he shows up.”
Johson also expressed that he feels a sense of obligation to fans to make an example of Borg should they fight and ensure that there is a champion people can rely on to show up and fight.
“We can’t have an unreliable champ,” Johnson said. “I gotta go out there and put this man away and make sure you guys have a champion that’s always gonna show up, always gonna fight and is always gonna make weight.”
When asked about whether he feels Borg owes him a phone call or explanation for his illness, Johnson doesn’t feel it’s necessary but said he should consider bantamweight if the weight cut is too much.
Borg has had difficulty making weight in the past, but he and his camp claim that the illness that kept him out of the fight last week was not weight-cut related. At the same time though, Borg parted ways with his nutritionist soon after the cancellation of the fight.

If the Borg fight doesn’t come together. Henry Cejudo has expressed interest in a rematch with the flyweight champ and Sergio Pettis is also waiting in the wings after his victory over Brandon Moreno last month.
With his immediate fighting future up in the air, all Demetrious Johnson can do is stay prepared and hope that whoever he is booked against can make it to the cage.
