A Champions League referee was really luckily he wasn’t hit with a flare during a match on Wednesday

Now look, you don’t have to like the sport of soccer to know that the sport has maybe the craziest fans in the entire world. Yeah, you may think that your sport has some rabid fans, but the reality is that nothing compares to the passion and insanity that soccer fans have — especially international soccer fans. This passion and insanity is especially brought out when the most prestigious tournament is taking place, which it currently is, the Champions League.

On Wednesday as the current edition of the Champions League plays itself out, we saw just how crazy soccer fans can be, and a poor referee almost paid the price for it. During the group stage on Wednesday, Maribor was on the road taking on Spartak Moscow, and of course someone in the stands had some flares to play with. Well, a fan fired one of these flares onto the pitch, and it almost ended in disaster as it just narrowly missed the referee.

This most certainly isn’t the first time that some flares have run rampant inside a soccer stadium, and it really makes you wonder what keeps some of these fans coming back. One thing on my personal bucket list is to attend an international soccer match overseas, but you bet that if I’m in attendance when a scene like that breaks out, it’ll be the first and last that I attend.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, as this really could have ended in tragedy. That just barely missed the referee, not to mention the players on the pitch that were in danger as well.

As for the game itself? Well, the Spartak Moscow fans weren’t completely satisfied, as this group stage matched ended in a 1-1 tie.
