The Olympics are back in Los Angeles for the Summer 2028 Olympic Games.

Since 1896, the United States has hosted the Summer Olympic Games four times. Los Angeles has hosted two of those games. In 2028, Los Angeles will make it three out of five. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted today and decided on Paris as the host of the 2024 Games and Los Angeles as the host of the 2028 Games.

Los Angeles has previously hosted the games in 1932 and in 1984. The 2028 Games will be the first L.A.-based Olympics in 44 years, which is two Olympic Games cycles shorter than the previous gap. It will be the first US-based Summer Olympic Games since 1996 when Atlanta played host. Hopefully, the Olympic home-field advantage will increase medal counts.

The IOC selected L.A. as the host for the 2028 Olympic Games in a complicated process. Originally, L.A., Budapest, Hamburg, Rome and Paris all applied as hosts for the 2024 Games. Budapest, Hamburg, and Rome all withdrew their bids, leaving only L.A. and Paris.

The IOC Executive Board then decided that both cities had great proposals. This led the IOC to decide to name one city as the host for the games in 2024 and one for the host in 2028. The IOC named Paris the host in 2024 and L.A. as the sole candidate for the 2028 Games.

The IOC Executive Board officially confirmed this plan on Sept. 13, 2017, leaving both cities very excited. The Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2028 had the following to say.

LA will likely hold the 2028 Games in many of the buildings used in the 1984 games, including the Memorial Coliseum.  According to the strategy presented by the group when they were still gunning for the 2024 Games, the committee plans to only build two venues while the overwhelming majority are already in existence. This will help keep costs down.

The venues under construction are the Banc of California Stadium and the LA Stadium at Hollywood Park. These stadiums will also be the homes of the LA FC soccer team and the LA Rams and Chargers football teams, respectively.
