Oakland Athletics 64-8

Last week: 6-4
Last rank: 27

The A’s pulled off an unthinkable four-game sweep of the Houston Astros last week and scored 41 runs in the process. That was just a small taste of how good their offense can be on a given night. Unfortunately, Oakland’s young hitters still lack consistency.

Rookie Matt Olson has been the American League’s version of Rhys Hoskins. The first baseman now has 18 home runs on the year in only 157 at-bats. Olson is not quite as polished at the plate as Hoskins, but he is only 23. The A’s are going to be fun next year. Sure, they’ll boot the ball all over the field and strike out a ton, but the dingers will be flying.

San Diego Padres 65-81

Last week: 4-6
Last rank: 26

The Padres have not folded as the season enters its final weeks. Their hard play the past two weeks has them up to their highest position in the MLB Power Rankings so far this year. Yes, they lost a two-game series to the Minnesota Twins by a score of 19-1 and gave up seven home runs — baby steps.

Let’s look at the positives for the Padres. They have not been completely overmatched in September. That bodes well for next season, as their call-ups have performed well. These are the prospects that the Padres future depends on.
