The Cyclones lost to their rivals, the Hawkeyes of Iowa, in an offensive showdown by a score of 44-41. Iowa State has relied on their passing to keep their offense going this season. Quarterback Jacob Park has made this strategy fairly effective, thus far.
Park has thrown for 618 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in two games. He has been fairly accurate with a 64.2 completion percentage. He will need to keep up this level of play if Iowa State hopes to find success this season. Their running game was surprisingly decent against Iowa. David Montgomery ran for 112 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. Defense is definitely something Iowa State will need to work on as the season goes on. They’ve given up an average of 437.5 yards per game. Iowa State should win this game, but if they continue to play lackluster defense, they could be surprised.
Akron is coming into this contest with a lot of confidence after a huge Week 2 victory. They defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 52-3 at home. The Zips will look to continue utilizing everything that worked so well in their previous game.
The offense could do whatever they wanted. Quarterback Thomas Woodson passed for 166 yards on 15 of 21 passing. He played only a half before he was substituted. Not only was their aerial attack successful, Akron ran the ball well. Warren Ball led the way with 166 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.
However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing the entire season for the Zips. They had to begin the year in Happy Valley against Penn State. They had no chance in that game, losing 52-0. Their defense is obviously inconsistent. They allowed 569 yards in their opening game while allowing 168 yards the next week. Akron should be able to cause problems for the Cyclones if they continue to play the way they did against the Golden Lions.
