The discussion following the New York Giants’ 19-3 Sunday night loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football was the team’s continual issues on the offensive line, as well as the absence of start wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The lack of a running game remains a concern as well.

But what isn’t often talked about is the residual effects when it comes to Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive unit. The Cowboys owned the football for 34:14 in the 16-point victory. They rolled up 392 total yards, 22 first downs and were 8-of-15 on third-down conversions. And yes, they settle for four field goals but they didn’t allow the Giants to stay on the field long enough to establish any kind of rhythm.

So can the Detroit Lions’ defense take advantage of Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning sometimes-erratic play? Last week at home, Jim Caldwell’s club picked off Arizona Cardinals’ signal-caller Carson Palmer three times in the team’s 35-23 win. All told, the Lions took advantage of four turnovers by Bruce Arians’ team. It was good news for a Detroit team that totaled only 14 takeaways all of last season.

While a lot of the numbers point the way of the visiting Lions, we look for the New York Giants to get untracked at the expense of a club that lost six of its nine overall road games in ’16. Meanwhile, this is a very vulnerable Detroit defensive unit that still has too many question marks.
