The BYU Cougars loaded up with quality opponents for the 2017 college football season, and as a result, the team enters this week’s matchup with Wisconsin 1-2. After beating FCS opponent Portland State in less than dominant fashion in the season opener, BYU was shut out 27-0 by LSU in New Orleans during the official Week 1. Last week, archival Utah beat the Cougars 19-13 in Holy War.
While the defense showed promise against the Vikings, LSU rolled up 479 yards of total offense, including 294 rushing yards, and Utah threw for 314 yards and finished with 430 total yards. Overall, opponents have gained 5.13 yards per play against the Cougars, which ranked No. 64 in the nation.
The offense has also struggled to get going. BYU ranks No. 125 in total offense (231.7 total yards per game) and No. 119 in yards per play (4.23). BYU gained just97 total yards against LSU, including minus-5 on the ground. The Cougars fared only slightly better against Utah, gaining 233 total yards, including 63 rushing yards.
Quarterback Tanner Mangum has completed just 54.4 percent of his passes for 466 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions.
