AC Milan face Udinese at the San Siro on Sunday. Sept. 17. Here’s everything you need to know to  watch.

AC Milan may have spent heavily during the summer transfer window in order to put together a club built to win, but what they found is that it will take more than a bunch of new faces to turn around their fortunes.

The Rossoneri learned that lesson the hard way last Sunday when they lost 4-1 to Lazio at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. AC Milan’s defense crumbled under the pressure of Lazio striker Ciro Immobilie, who scored a hat-trick, and the offense never got off the ground. The final score could have been even worse had it not been for a series of great saves by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“This doesn’t bother me,” reassured coach Vincenzo Montella during the post-game news conference. “We are a team in construction.”

Montella is not entirely wrong. This AC Milan lineup does have a lot of new faces. After finishing sixth last season to qualify for this season’s Europe League, AC Milan doled out in excess of £150 million to sign players, including defender Leonardo Bonucci, striker Andre Silva as well as midfielders Franck Kessie and Hakan Calhanoglu.

While some of these players had a disappointing outing against Lazio, AC Milan defeated Austria Vienna 5-1 to open group play in the Europa League, thanks to a hat-trick by new signing Andre Silva. For a night, at least, it looked as if the legendary AC Milan of old were outdoing opponents in Europe. It will need to take that momentum into Serie A this weekend as they look to keep up with the top of the pack.

Udinese, in fifth place with three points, are a plucky side and always hard to defeat either on the road and at home. While AC Milan have the edge of playing at the San Siro, never count out Udinese and their ability to grind out a result. They got their first win of the season last weekend when Jakub Jankto tallied the game-winner after just 15 minutes to down Genoa.

Udinese left-back Giuseppe Pezzella, who received a red card against Genoa, is out due to suspension, while coach Luigi Delneri will have striker Maxi Lopez at his disposal. The 33-year-old forward, who Udinese acquired at the end of last month right near the close of the summer transfer window, hopes to add offensive firepower to a team that needs it. Lopez has been playing in Italy since 2010 with Catania, AC Milan, Sampdoria, Chievo Verona and last season with Torino. He scored just once in eight games during his brief time at AC Milan in 2012.
