Carolina Panthers tight end Chris Olsen broke his foot on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, and his backup is not a big-name player at all.

When the Carolina Panthers saw star tight end go down with an apparent foot injury, they must have been holding their breath. Greg Olsen has been a star for the team over the past three seasons, racking up over 1,000 yards in each campaign. He has also been to the Pro Bowl for the last three seasons, so losing him for an extended period of time would prove to be devastating.

Well, the Panthers fears were realized on Sunday, as Olsen broke his foot and his out indefinitely. Unless you are die-hard fan, you probably have no idea who the next player listed on the depth chart is at the tight end position. That person would be Chris Manhertz, who went to college at a place that does not have a football team.

Manhertz went to Canisius, who abolished their football program before he arrived on campus. The 6-foot-6 tight end played basketball during his time at the university, and was offered a tryout by the Buffalo Bills back in 2015. Canisius is located in Buffalo, though Manhertz did not make the preseason roster after his tryout.

He was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad for the 2016 season, and made his NFL Debut that September. However, he was cut by the team on October 16, and was signed by the Carolina Panthers the next day. He appeared in four games last season, making one catch, so his NFL experience is a bit less than that of Olsen.

Carolina saw Cam Newton also get shook up on Sunday, as the offense sputtered for the second week in a row. They might decided to roll with Manhertz in this most important position, but they are probably already looking for a replacement. Former college basketball players have proven to be decent at the tight end position in the NFL, but that is quite a longshot for the Panthers at this point.
