LOS ANGELES, CA - SEPTEMBER 16: Sam Ehlinger

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger threw the game-leading touchdown pass in the final minute, which put the Longhorns ahead of USC. However, a field goal tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger stepped into the Saturday night spotlight against USC. He played for Shane Buechele, the usual starter, due to a shoulder injury. Ehlinger is a true freshman with just one previous game of experience. It meant he walked into Southern California with plenty of pressure to lead the Longhorns, as they looked to avenge an early-season loss to Maryland.

Ehlinger struggled against USC, with throws that sailed all over the place. That included the final drive, which had him take the offense down the field. One play saw him launch the ball into USC territory, along with a crucial conversion on fourth down.

Well, with just under one minute remaining, Ehlinger slung a touchdown pass to Armanti Foreman, who kept his feet in bounds, and secured the lead. An extra point later, this gave UT the 17-14 lead.

What a throw from Ehlinger and catch by Foreman. It was a terrific play to get Texas ahead.

However, a USC field goal tied it at 17-17 and brought the game to overtime. It was a lightning-quick drive from USC’s Sam Darnold that got them to this range. So, there is plenty more to come, unless things end faster tan expected in overtime.
