Titans at Jaguars: Highlights, score and recap
By John Buhler
The Tennessee Titans rout the AFC South rival Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday in Week 2, 37-16. Here are all the highlights, the recap and final score.
Well, it was close at halftime. The Jacksonville Jaguars were down 6-3 to the division rival Tennessee Titans in Week 2 in North Florida. Then the turnovers started to happen. Shortly after that, Tennessee’s offense finally started to come alive with Marcus Mariota at quarterback.
Tennessee would blow out the Jaguars in their own building, routing Jacksonville 37-16 in this Week 2 AFC South rivalry game. It has become very clear that the Jaguars cannot win games with Blake Bortles at quarterback, even if they try to pound the rock with rookie running back Leonard Fournette.
Though the defense held its own for a while, Jacksonville would eventually crater to the Exotic Smash Mouth offense of Mike Mularkey’s Titans. This was not Mariota’s best game, but he found a way to lead his team to its first victory of the season over a divisional rival.
His best weapon offensively was running back Derrick Henry. He would have 14 carries for 92Â yards and a touchdown. Mariota spread the ball around decently in the passing game, hitting targets like wide receiver Rishard Matthews and tight end Delanie Walker later in the afternoon.
The Titans would buckle down defensively to contain Jacksonville throughout the contest. It would be a great day for linebacker Wesley Woodyard and Brian Orakpo. Rookie cornerback Adoree’ Jackson is starting to show promise on the outside, as well in the return game.
After thinking Jacksonville was the creme de la creme of the AFC South for a week, we are thankfully reminded that the division does not run through EverBank Field. The Titans got back to good with a huge first win of the season over the Jaguars.
Three Stars
- Derrick Henry: Henry had 14 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown.
- Wesley Woodyard: Woodyard had nine tackles, six solo and one for a loss of yardage.
- Marcus Mariota: Mariota completed 15 of 27 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He would also scramble for 24 yards on six carries.
