Twitter reacts to judges scoring Canelo vs. GGG a draw
By David Rouben
Canelo vs. GGG, the biggest fight of the year, predictably ended in a controversial decision. Twitter had lots to say about the outcome.
When all is said and done, Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin lived up to the hype. We were promised tremendous action, and we got it. We were promised a war, and it was a back-and-forth contest despite GGG looking like he took over in the middle rounds.
While Twitter was on the edge of its seat throughout the fight, when it went to the scorecards, they still feared the worst in the back of their mind. It was only two months ago that Jeff Horn was awarded a win over Manny Pacquiao due to home cooking. When the scorecards were read, it was clear that some of the judges (namely Adalaide Byrd) were biased in favor of Canelo. Instead, a third column has been added to Golovkin’s pristine record.
While some people still chose to view this as a great fight, others believe the outcome ruined everything they had just seen:
This is why they always say you never leave it in the hands of the judges. Golovkin knew that, which is why he became a knockout artist, although his last two fights have now ended in a questionable decision. On the other side, this isn’t the first time that a judge scored it a draw in a fight Canelo should’ve lost, as Floyd Mayweather can attest to.

As much as it sucks, bad judging is always going to be a part of the sport. While it shouldn’t take away from what transpired over 36 minutes, it inevitably does when the proper outcome isn’t recognized. Claiming that this ruins the sport of boxing is false, too, since it creates a rematch which historically does better than the original fight.
Given that both fighters already agreed to a rematch in the ring, we should be treated to one within the next 12 months. Hopefully it comes without Adalaide Byrd.
