The USC Trojans beat the Texas Longhorns in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday night, and Twitter was all over it.

In their first meeting since the legendary 2006 Rose Bowl, the Texas Longhorns and USC Trojans provided another classic.

The matchup was hyped plenty during the offseason after USC closed the year on a nine-game winning streak and Texas made a splash head coaching hire with Tom Herman, but lost some of its luster when the Longhorns were dismantled in a 51-31 loss to Maryland in the opener. Texas’ defense has made huge strides since, as the Longhorns only 14-7 at the break following a wild sequence near the end of the half.

Texas kicked a field goal early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 14-10, where the score would remain for nearly the entire second half. With time winding down and neither offense doing much, Longhorns freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger led a heroic drive and hit Armanti Foreman on a touchdown pass to give Texas a 17-14 advantage with 54 seconds to go.

Heisman contender Sam Darnold didn’t panic, and drove USC into field goal range near the end of regulation. The Trojans couldn’t feel too confident with a true freshman walk-on kicker, but Chase McGrath nailed a 31-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

Both teams scored easily in the first overtime to keep the score locked at 24. Texas looked to be heading in for a touchdown in double overtime before Ehlinger was stripped by Christian Rector, and McGrath calmly hit a 43-yard game-winner to keep USC’s playoff hopes alive.
