In one of the more sobering scenes in recent memory at a ballpark, a young child was drilled with a foul ball down the third-base line at Yankee Stadium.
In the bottom of the fifth inning of a Wednesday afternoon game between the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees, we witnessed one of the scarier moments of the season. With New York’s Todd Frazier at the dish, the third baseman roped a foul ball just over the dugout down the third-base line, hitting a young fan.
While it is tough to see exactly what happened, fans began immediately waving for medical attention. The game was stopped for many minutes as the youngster received medical attention, with fans and players looking on. Many players, including Matt Holliday, appeared moved to emotion. Wisely, ESPN did not show a replay of the foul, with the commentators stating that it was too graphic.
Luckily, it appears the child escaped serious injury with the response of a fan sitting in the nearby section, following the young kid’s removal from his seat.
Child appeared responsive as an older gentleman carried the child out of view. A fan seated nearby gave thumb's up in Frazier direction.

At some juncture, it’s time to start talking about whether netting should go up along the lines, at least extending into the outfield. There has never been a fan who was killed by a foul ball, although many have been forced to leave for medical attention. Furthermore, why continue to run the risk for those in seats close to the field, especially in the infield? With players stronger than ever, it’s increasingly nerve-wracking to be so tight against the action.
We will continue to update this story with any news coming out of New York.
