Lazio host Napoli on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in midweek Serie A action. Here’s what you need to know before you watch.

Napoli, the team many have predicted could win the league title this season, and Lazio, Serie A’s surprise side of the moment, meet in what is expected to be a thrilling affair in the Eternal City on Wednesday. Given the great form both teams are currently in, the match promises to be an excellent one and high on intensity and entertainment.

Aside from Juventus, Napoli and Lazio are the two clubs that have played the most-entertaining soccer in Serie A thus far this season. Both teams defend well (although Lazio have given up some easy goals as of late as seen in their 3-2 come-from-behind win against Genoa on Sunday) and feature plenty of offensive firepower.

For Napoli, Dries Mertens has again proven to be one of the best forwards in the world, tallying five goals in just four games. His hat-trick against Benevento fueled Napoli’s offense this past Sunday in an epic 6-0 victory at home. For Lazio, Ciro Immobile has been exceptional. His six goals and one assist in league play have proven key for Lazio as was his second-half brace this past Sunday at Genoa. His two goals last month against Juventus in the Italian Super Cup also powered his side to the preseason trophy.

Napoli have four wins in as many games, including Sunday’s rout in the first-ever Campania derby contested between the two sides in the top flight. The home win went a long way in trying to erase the shocking 2-1 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine last week to open the Champions League. The victory also kept Napoli in first place with 12 points along with Juventus and Inter Milan. Like Juve, Napoli have been strong in the league but not so much in other competitions. Aside from Mertens, Napoli features crafty winger Lorenzo Insigne in attack as well as midfielder Marek Hamsik, who finally looks to be in shape this season.

“Our objective is to play well in Rome versus Lazio. We can’t look past that,” Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri said following Sunday’s win when asked whether Napoli could win the league title this season.

Lazio need Immobile, who was born in a suburb just outside Naples, to have another great game if the club wants to aim high. His second-half brace against Genoa allowed his team to catapult Lazio to second place with 10 points. Napoli’s stout defense, however, will certainly be looking to double-team Immobile, hoping to cancel out whatever heroics the Italian international might have in store for them. Indeed, the team coached by Simone Inzaghi needs a victory in order to stay with the top of the pack. Lazio have certainly been one of Serie A’s biggest surprises of the year, but only long-term consistency will reveal whether they are for real or just off to a good start.

“The goals and the statistics don’t count,” Immobile said after the win at Genoa. “What counts is giving it your all. Hard work always pays off. I have worked hard. I am finally collecting on that hard work.”
