1. Bob Geren

Geren is in his second season as bench coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers right now, and he spent the previous four seasons in the same role under Collins with the Mets.

After being bench coach for the Oakland Athletics from 2003-2006, Geren served as manager there from 2007 through the middle of the 2011 season. But the A’s never made the playoffs in any of his four full seasons, with a peak at the .500 mark (81-81) in 2010. Injuries played a role in his .470 winning percentage (334-376) in Oakland though, and Geren seems sure to eventually get another chance to manage.

Alderson made his name in baseball as Oakland’s general manager in the 80’s and 90’s. He was also a mentor to Billy Beane, who right or wrong became the prominent face of the analytics movement in baseball based on Michael Lewis’ book “Moneyball” and the eventual movie based on it. Beane hired Geren as Oakland’s manager, and it’s easy to think Alderson will consider doing the same for the Mets now.

If the Dodgers make a deep run in October, the Mets will have to wait to officially hire Geren. But a patient search should be coming, and if Geren is deemed to be the right guy he will be worth waiting for.
