Who are the top running back sleepers for Week 3?

In this series, we identify players who you will want to find space for in your starting lineups this week. We cover names who aren’t on your list of “must-starts”, but could fit into gaps where you need a boost.

10. Wendell Smallwood

The Giants’ much-vaunted defense does not look good So far this season, they’ve surrendered 133.5 rushing yards per game and that leaves them 28th in the NFL. It’s not all their fault, but until Eli Manning and the rest of the offense can show enough to keep the D off the field, this a unit that you don’t need to worried about playing your fantasy footballers against.

I listed Sproles as a sleeper last week and he came through, but the Eagles running back rotation is in full swing. LeGarrette Blount had 14 carries for 46 yards in Week 1, and was subsequently given no carries at all against the Chiefs. Sproles has only two carries in Week 1, but followed that with 12 touches and 78 total yards. Who are we to predict what’s coming next?

This backfield is still up for grabs, and Smallwood has been talked up by the coaches all summer. With Ameer Abdullah’s success on the ground last week, and Smallwood’s similar explosive playing style, Philadelphia should finally get their second-year man involved. Unless Odell Beckham can single-handedly turn things around for the whole Giants team, the Eagles will be running the ball.
