Did NFL players protest national anthem after Donald Trump comments?
Donald Trump had harsh words for national anthem protesters in the NFL Friday night, but did players do it anyway on Sunday?
Just by opening his mouth, president Donald Trump elicits a reaction. The NFL was his target at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday night, as Trump gave a profane label to players that protest our national anthem, and used a variation of his popular tag line from “The Apprentice” to say what should happen to them.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reacted to Trump’s words on Saturday via a statement, and multiple team owners have offered their thoughts denouncing the president’s sentiment too.
Here is Goodell’s statement, along the same lines as what NFL owners have said.
"“The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we’ve experienced over the last month. Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities.”"
Trump had a reaction of his own.
Trump is not letting his initial words about NFL players who kneel for the anthem stand on their own, and he surely won’t be letting it go as long as there is something to react to from the other side.
Network television cameras certainly have their proverbial eye out to capture any displays of protest on the sideline as the national anthem gets going before Sunday’s games. Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson said he would be making a “statement” of some sort.
The primary question, followed by the secondary question starting with “how”, is this. Did NFL players protest against Trump’s comments in droves as their games got set to kick off on Sunday?
