Richard Sherman is an emotional player, but sometimes he loses his damn mind with disastrous results.

Emotion and passion are two ways that accurately describe Richard Sherman’s playing style. From grabbing the mic from Erin Andrews after the NFC Championship Game to his

In the first quarter, Sherman went for the trifecta by getting three penalties on the same play. He was called for holding and also defensive pass interference. He was then flagged for flipping out and earned an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

That was sort of enjoyable, and the version of Sherman’s passion that we can chuckle at and have fun with.

The worst moment, though, came when he took a violent and vicious cheap shot at Marcus Mariota and incited a small brawl. The kicker is that the Titans were penalized for what essentially amounted to defending their quarterback.

Say what you will about Sherman, but there’s no defending this:

That’s something that football doesn’t need, regardless of what the president says about hard hits in football. Mariota was clearly out of bounds when Sherman tried to take his head off, and deserved a flag.

Some questioned why Sherman wasn’t kicked out of the game. He had already received an unsportsmanlike penalty earlier in the game but wasn’t ejected after picking up a flag for his hit on Mariota.

The reason he wasn’t kicked out was due to the difference in penalties. An automatic ejection comes after two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, but unnecessary roughness doesn’t count towards that. Well, sometimes it does but it’s like the catch rule where it’s largely discretionary and isn’t an exact science.

Either way, someone might want to check on Sherman because he’s losing his damn mind and it’s not really funny anymore.
