Steelers will not take field for national anthem
The Pittsburgh Steelers will stage a team-wide national anthem protest on Sunday by remaining in the locker room during the song.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are showing their unity as a team by participating as an entire roster in a protest during the national anthem played before Sunday’s game in Chicago.
As various players and NFL franchises prepare for their Week 3 games, one of the decisions that the team personnel have to make is what to do in regards to the comments made by Donald Trump in regards to NFL players who have participated in national anthem protests.
The Steelers couldn’t be much more clear about their decision of how to respond, or more unified as a team.
This is the only statement to come from the organization on the topic thus far, although offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva made comments about Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protests last year. Villanueva said that he agreed with Kaepernick’s message but not the way he was sending it.
Unity among players has been a strong theme early on Sunday, as a Facebook post by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and a joint protest by the entire Raiders offensive line demonstrate. Regardless of potential personal political feelings, staying together as a team and preserving the unity of a locker room are of utmost importance to these NFL players. It’s unclear right now if the Bears will take the field, or if any of their players will be taking part in any national anthem protests. The franchise has declined any comment thus far.
