WWE No Mercy 2017 highlights: John Cena vs. Roman Reigns
John Cena vs. Roman Reigns headlined the 2017 WWE No Mercy pay-per-view. What happened in the match?
John Cena vs. Roman Reigns can headline any event WWE puts on, including WrestleMania. They had the chance to save this first-time match for a bigger event, but ran it at Sunday night’s No Mercy pay-per-view, a Raw-exclusive show.
Cena and Reigns are two of WWE’s most polarizing names of all time. They draw raucous reactions and remain at the forefront of wrestling discussion. From their promos, in-ring ability and comparisons, it makes them intertwined forever.
Well, on Sunday night this match actually happened. Cena vs. Reigns became real as they entered the Staples Center.
The polarizing reactions started the moment both entrances finished and when everyone got the chance to soak this first-time match in. It took about three minutes for the action to begin, until Cena walked out of the ring and Reigns chased him down. That led to the match finally getting underway.
Reigns was all over Cena when they got back to the ring. The action stayed somewhat slow, while the crowd chanted “CM Punk” at them.
Cena got back into it, with his trademark shoulder tackles, but was quickly put back down. They went back-and-forth in the ring, which led to a Cena Attitude Adjustment. The match looked over, but Reigns barely kicked out before three.
At the top turnbuckle, Cena looked to put Reigns away with his Super AA. This usually puts his opponent away, but not at No Mercy. The Leader of the Cenation then tried to put Reigns through the announce table, but that didn’t work, either, as the Big Dog hit a monstrous spear.
In the ring, Reigns tried another spear, but Cena countered with an AA. He hit a second one, which got kicked out. An unbelievable sequence and moment at No Mercy, something few, if anyone, ever accomplished in the WWE.
Moments later, Reigns caught Cena with a quick punch and spear to win. What a match.
A very fun match, with an anti-climactic finish. That didn’t hurt what was seen beforehand, a polarizing showcase between two of WWE’s top stars.
The story was Cena’s attempt to do everything possible to put Reigns away. He couldn’t, even after nearly a half-dozen finishing moves. Reigns was made to look unstoppable.
