If you have plans this weekend, you better start making up excuses to get out of them so you can spend some time on your couch watching these college football games.

It’s that time of year when you need to be careful about committing to anything on the weekend because of our football obligations. The last thing you want to do is commit to going somewhere on a Saturday afternoon and miss the SEC game of the week on CBS or a primetime showdown between undefeated teams on ABC. You can’t wake up on Saturday and realize you’re going to miss the big game because you agreed to clean out the garage, go shopping with your wife or girlfriend or because you said you can visit your aunt and uncle who are in town visiting.

The time is now to start coming up with your excuses to get out of any sort of weekend obligations. It’s easy for me because I can get out of everything on Saturday, because of this job that lets me write about college football. But it’s imperative you don’t commit to anything without first consulting the schedule for the week. As always, there will be some games that aren’t worth your time and you can squeeze in something from your to-do list. And there will be large pockets of time where your only commitment should be to your couch and your television so you don’t miss the action from across the country.

I’m here to help you, so I’ve come up with the five college football games this weekend that you absolutely can’t miss. Whatever you do, you better be parked in front of the TV, because these games have playoff implications and interest to the casual fan. If you have a prior commitment, start working on your fake cough so you can fake sick and get out of it. Set an alarm, clear your calendar and don’t miss these five games under any circumstances.
