Texas Longhorns 1-2

Last week: Bye week
Last rank: 6th

A bye week made Texas fall two spots in the Big 12 power rankings, along with the play of other teams in Week 4. At 1-2, however, the Longhorns belong at No. 8, even before teams like Iowa State and Texas Tech get the chance to prove themselves.

Tom Herman’s team last played on Sep. 16 against USC. It was a thriller in Southern California, as the game went to overtime. However, a costly fumble gave the ball back to Sam Darnold and the offense, which led to a game-winning field goal.

Texas will look for redemption on Thursday when they go to Ames to face Iowa State. This is the first Big 12 game of their season, so look for some direction out of the team as they regroup.

Iowa State Cyclones 2-1

Last week: Win at Akron, 41-14
Last rank: 7th

Despite the win over Akron and test against Iowa, Iowa State remained at No. 7 in the Big 12 power rankings. With a soft two wins, this team can’t be trusted to maintain this success, at least until the aftermath of their Week 5 game against Texas.

If the Cyclones knock off the Longhorns, it will go a long way toward their Big 12 placement. It might not — and probably won’t — be near the top of the conference, but any improvement from the past few miserable years would be a step in the right direction.

If Iowa State does win they’ll have Oklahoma in the rearview mirror. So will Thursday be a must-win?
