We’ve seen upsets start to mount in recent weeks, but which teams should be put on upset alert entering Week 5 of the college football season?
There has been plenty of shaking things up in the 2017 college football season to this point. Though it’s hard to blame them after losing Deondre Francois in their opener vs. Alabama, having the Florida State Seminoles sitting with a winless record in Week 5 isn’t what anyone expected to see. However, that’s far from where the shocking things about this season start.
Another big shock to this point has been how closely the USC Trojans have been flying to the sun. Having been thought of coming into the season as a potential National Championship contender, they have been largely just escaping a series of close calls in games that shouldn’t be that close. They aren’t alone, though some others haven’t been as lucky.
Now that we’re entering Week 5 of the 2017 college football season, things could potentially heat up even more. This is when big-time conference matchups start taking shapes between teams that haven’t been tested and teams that might be better than we once thought. Subsequently, the recipe for a number of big upsets is there.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at the slate for this weekend and the five college football teams that should be on upset alert in Week 5.
5. Miami Hurricanes
Rank: 14, Opponent: Duke Blue Devils
It would be an accurate assessment to say that we don’t know what the Miami Hurricanes are just yet. Yes, they’re 2-0 and still ranked No. 14 in the country. However, they haven’t exactly faced a high level of competition in those two games, beating Bethune-Cookman and Toledo. What’s more, the fact that Hurricane Irma has limited them to only two games thus far doesn’t bode well for them as they face an underrated Duke Blue Devils team.

Duke also enters this Friday night matchup with an undefeated record and looking like a team that could be much better than anyone would’ve ever guessed. To this point, quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense have proven that they are a legitimately quality unit that can put up points on any level of competition. What’s more, their defense has proven much more solid than expected. And if that weren’t enough, this game will be played in Durham.
No one should mistake the fact that Miami has the most talent in this game. However, Malik Rosier largely remains unproven and the Hurricanes defense is also a tad suspect after being pushed by Toledo a week ago. With all of these factors, the recipe for an upset is certainly there as Duke could put their name on the map in the 2017 season beyond a shadow of a doubt.
