While CFL teams have reached out, Colin Kaepernick is focused on playing again in the NFL.

For the second time in a month, Colin Kaepernick is turning down a CFL team. The Montreal Alouettes reached out to Kaepernick but did not receive a response from the former San Fransisco 49ers starting quarterback. Kaepernick has been without a team since March 2017, with many people theorizing that Kaepernick’s protests last season are a major reason why an NFL has not signed him.

Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed told Kaepernick’s agent that they held his CFL rights. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats previously held Kaepernick’s CFL negotiation rights but dropped him from their list of protected players after he made it clear he was not interested in signing with the club. Montreal added Kaepernick’s right to their negotiation list, shortly after Hamilton dropped him.

If Kaepernick wants to resume his NFL career, signing with a CFL team might not be the best option. Should Kaepernick decided to play in the CFL, Kaepernick would have to sign a two-year contract. With Kaepernick turning 30 in November, signing in the CFL for two years could close the door on an NFL return. And after making more than $40 million in his NFL career, there is no financial incentive to play in the CFL.

Kaepernick has been out of the NFL since he opted out of his contract with the 49ers in March. He had previously restructured his contract last season to give himself the ability to get out of it. Kaepernick has been a free agent since March with no teams showing interest despite many teams needing quarterbacks.
