San Francisco 49ers extend cornerback K’Waun Williams for three years

The San Francisco 49ers extended their new cornerback K’Waun Williams through 2020.

Three games into his one-year deal, the San Francisco 49ers have signed K’Waun Williams to a nice extension. While the terms of the deal have not been fully released, we do know it is a three-year deal and he is now under contract until 2020.

The 49ers liked what they saw enough in three games to decide to bring Williams back for three more years. His play this year has been pretty good. According to Pro Football Reference, Williams has two passes defended and fourteen total tackles in one start and three games.

Williams started his career as an undrafted free agent who signed with the Browns in 2014. In two years, Williams started ten games with the Browns. He then chose to sit out the first preseason game of the 2016 season due to an ankle injury.

The Browns suspended him for two weeks on Aug. 18, 2016, and released him on Aug. 29. The Chicago Bears attempted to sign him to a contract, but Williams failed the physical. He did not play in 2016.

Williams filed a grievance against the Browns to pay for his surgery and his 2016 salary. He then signed a one-year deal with the 49ers in February of 2017. He has played nickel cornerback for the 49ers this season.

Ultimately, the 49ers think Williams is good enough to keep around for a few years. At worst, he’s a serviceable cornerback to keep on the roster for depth. At best, he’s a fringe starter who can help the team out as a starter or in a rotation. Assuming his cap hit is not insanely large, this is a good signing as the 49ers rebuild.
