St. Louis was left devastated after the Cardinals lost a must-win game in a heartbreaking way.

For the second consecutive season, the St. Louis Cardinals will not advance to the postseason. Although they kept themselves in the race up until the very end, the Cardinals were not able to get over the hump. St. Louis failed to capture a win when it mattered most. The Cardinals gave the Cubs their all, but it still wasn’t enough.

It took a robbed extra innings home run to put St. Louis down. Leonys Martín leapt above the centerfield wall to grab the game-tying home run and clinch win No. 90 for the Cubs. Additionally, Martín crushed the crowd in St. Louis as his catch officially eliminated the Cardinals from contention. It was a long-shot to catch the Rockies anyways, but stranger things have happened over the years in St. Louis. For the first time since 2006-07, the Cardinals will miss the postseason in back-to-back seasons.

As teams approach their final three regular season games, the Wild Card races are beginning to thin out. With the American League Wild Card already decided, two teams still remain in contention for the National League’s second Wild Card spot. The Diamondbacks secured home field for the Wild Card, but their opponent has yet to be determined and the race is coming down to the wire.

The Rockies, with three games to go, hold a two-game lead over the Brewers for the second Wild Card spot. However, despite a narrow window of opportunity, there’s still hope for Brewers fans. Milwaukee will end its season in St. Louis, battling the recently eliminated Cardinals. Whereas the Rockies host the Dodgers to close out the year. With one team down and two to go, the NL Wild Card race is cutting it close.
