2. Confusing college scandal: A comprehensive explanation of the NCAA scandal being called ‘the sports story of the century’

One of the biggest stories in the history of college sports may have unfolded this week after Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Joon Kim announced federal charges and arrests related to an NCAA bribery ring.

The bribery ring was run by former employees of Adidas and sports agency ASM, and it targeted college coaches. The goal of the conspiracy was to get coaches to agree to persuade athletes to sign with an endorsement contract with Adidas and a representation agreement with ASM after graduating.

The scandal implicated at least four major Division I assistant coaches (including Chuck Person of Auburn and Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State University). Additionally, numerous schools are being investigated, including Arizona, Miami, Auburn, Louisville, Oklahoma State and USC. Recently, Nike’s grassroots-high school subsidiary was subpoenaed by the FBI as well.

According to Darren Heitner at Forbes, the NCAA has been warned not to interfere with the FBI’s criminal investigation in any way. As a result of the scandal, Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino and Louisville AD Tom Jurich are expected to be fired.
