The Noon ET slate for Week 5 of the college football season showed us South Florida continues to flirt with danger and Florida is forced to go back to Feleipe Franks
The fifth Saturday of the college football season is off and running, with of course the Noon slate of games wetting our palate for some Week 5 action that’s still to come.
As usual, our eyes were opened to some things that took place during this week’s Noon ET games here in Week 5, beginning with the South Florida Bulls continuing to tempt their New Year’s Six fate.
3. South Florida continues to flirt with disaster
When you look at the boxscore for South Florida’s win over East Carolina on Saturday, it’ll show you complete and utter destruction. However, no matter what the scoreboard says, Charlie Strong and the Bulls were out here tempting fate once again.
For once this season, South Florida came out guns blazing right out of the gate, scoring 21 points in the first quarter. It was a move away from the slow starts they’ve been experiencing this season as the preseason New Year’s Six Group of 5 favorite, so it seemed as if they may have turned in corner.
But in the third quarter, things got frightening for Strong and the Bulls again, as they allowed East Carolina to race back from 24-10 down to cut the lead to 38-31 with just over six minutes to play in the period. Eventually, the Bulls got everything back on track to make everything look easier than it actually was.
Fact of the matter is, we learned that USF continues to put their hand too close to the fire, whether it’s through shaky starts at the beginning or allowing opponents to mount comebacks after pulling out of the gate like an Olympic sprinter. You almost get the feeling they’re going to get too close to that fire at some point, and they’re going to get burned at some point throughout their AAC schedule.
