Danny Trevathan suspended 2 games for helmet-to-helmet hit on Davante Adams

Danny Trevathan has been suspended two games by the NFL for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Davante Adams during Thursday night’s game.

Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan has been suspended two games for his hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams during their Week 4 game on Thursday night. It was one of the ugliest hits you’ll ever see in a football game and the decision by the NFL was an expected one and the correct one.

Trevathan hit Adams square in the helmet, one of the types of hits the NFL has tried to eliminate from the game, and the Packers receiver was motionless immediately after. Jordy Nelson and his Packers teammates motioned for trainers to come to his aid almost before he hit the Lambeau Field grass on Thursday night. Adams was taken off the field on a stretcher but had motion in all his extremities and he said he was feeling good.

The hit was unnecessary, vicious, violent and warranted the penalty and suspension. It wasn’t necessarily a dirty or cheap hit, but it was a hit that has no place in the game and I’m shocked he wasn’t ejected from the game.

Trevathan doesn’t have a history of this behavior like a Brandon Meriweather would where a suspension would be levied with his past behavior in mind. That said, a two-game suspension may open up the possibility for Trevathan to appeal with the hope of getting it reduced to one game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL heard his appeal, which he’ll argue he didn’t have time to adjust his body, and that it wasn’t intentional. That’s all well and good, but the hit took place, and the NFL could choose to make an example out of Trevathan to make sure these hits stop.

The Bears defense has been solid for the most part this year but losing Trevathan means the Bears will be down two of their top linebackers with Jerrell Freeman sidelined.

Trevathan will miss next week’s home game vs. the Vikings and the road game vs. the Ravens in two weeks, pending any potential appeal of his suspension.
