Cleveland Cavaliers considering starting Kevin Love at center

As the Cleveland Cavaliers look to reach the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive season, Kevin Love could be seeing a position change.

Kevin Love starting at center for the Cleveland Cavaliers? It might not be as far-fetched as you think.

This has been a very busy offseason throughout the association. Star players have been relocating left and right. Not to mention, according to many, this rookie class is the most talented one since 2003. You know, the class that featured the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony.

As the dust settles, teams are prepping for the regular season. Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue is weighing a massive decision. With Kyrie Irving no longer in the fold, Cleveland has to figure out their floor spacing. This wouldn’t be as difficult if Isaiah Thomas were ready to go, but according to a report from The Athletic, he won’t be ready for a few months.

To begin the season, Cleveland’s starting backcourt will consist of Derrick Rose and Wade. While both guys are well respected around the league, neither is known for their outside shooting. This is where Kevin Love comes into play.

According to a report from ESPN, Instead of starting Love and Tristan Thompson in the front-court, Lue may explore having Love as their primary center. 

“Spacing opportunities, spacing the floor,” Lue said when asked what he likes about Love playing center. “Being able to play through the elbows with multiple guys.”

For his career, Love shoots 36 percent from beyond the arc. This past season, the 6-foot-10 forward shot 37 percent from distance. According to ESPN, the newly acquired Jae Crowder has been playing at the four a lot with the starting group.

Given his comments, Love appears to be open to the idea.

"“Tristan is a very dynamic roller, guy that plays a lot as a dunker. Myself, I have to play inside-out, mix that up and really take what the defense gives you. But it gives us a different look. I mentioned different dynamics out there on the floor with different lineups, and we’re so deep now that [Dwyane Wade] and a lot of guys similar in size at that 4-5 spot, we’re going to see guys playing interchangeable. It’s not just going to be on the defensive end in that regard.”"

In today’s NBA, positions are going out the window. You have ball handlers, wings, and bigs. However, the bigs nowadays are becoming better shooters each and every year. If Love does start at center it may not be permanent, especially when Thomas returns to the lineup. For now, it makes perfect sense.
