Colorado Rockies: Jonathan Lucroy

The Rockies took a flier on All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy who was having a horrible year with the Texas Rangers. The change of scenery has done the two-time All-Star well, and he has hit .301/.401/.426 in his first 42 games with the Rockies.

Without a solid fallback option, the Rockies need to make a strong effort to re-sign Lucroy this winter. This will be his first and likely only chance to test the market. His value will still be beaten down after an ugly start to the year with Texas. Lucroy’s defense has also slipped this year, but he still has a solid reputation as a backstop..

Lucroy may never hit for much power going forward, but he is still a good on-base hitter who does not strike out often. The Rockies do not need power at every position as long as they get traffic on the bases. The potential is still there for him to hit 20 home runs or more in Coors Field.

If the Rockies do not bring back Lucroy on a long-term deal, they may target Welington Castillo to fill their hole behind the plate. Castillo has drawn mixed reviews for his work framing pitches, but hit 20 home runs this year for the Orioles and has a great arm. Both catchers are good options for the offensive-minded Rockies.
