By trading Jimmy Butler and the 16th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft for an injured Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the 8th pick (Lauri Markkanen), the Bulls plunged into a rebuild that may take years. ESPN Insider ranked them dead last in their Future Power Rankings, judging they have the least valuable collection of players. Frustrated over the Butler trade and many previous transactions, fans crowdfunded a #FireGarPax billboard to express their displeasure. Some even wrote essays announcing why they are done cheering for Chicago.

To address the downward state of the franchise, Kelly Dwyer (@KDonHoops) joins the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast. Kelly used to be the editor of Yahoo’s Ball Don’t Lie blog, and has been supporting the Bulls from Mark Randall to Michael Jordan to Tyrus Thomas to Derrick Rose until now. Is there any chance he jumps ship now? How does he handle his disappointment about the front office? Can he find any bright spots in their future?

In addition to debating the degrees of haplessness/hopelessness, the following topics are covered:

  • Were things just as bleak or worse after the Jordan/Pippen dynasty ended in 1999?
  • Can hiring Doug Collins improve things? Or it is just the “same old garbage?
  • How can Fred Hoiberg differentiate himself and avoid being compared in Bulls history with Tim Floyd?
  • Of the litany of regrettable front office moves, which was Kelly’s least favorite?
  • League wide, are their any underlying factors that have contributed to the talent imbalance between the conferences?
